Fillings

To treat a cavity Dr. Bruggeman will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decayed material was removed.

What Steps Are Involved In Filling A Tooth?

First, the Dr. Bruggeman will use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth to be filled. If a patient has an extreme fear of the dental procedure inquire about sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry is available upon request. Next, the tooth decay will be removed with a drill, air abrasion instrument, or laser. The choice of instrument depends on each individual case.

Once the decay has been removed, Dr. Bruggeman will probe or test the area to determine if all the decay has been removed. The space is then prepared for the filling by cleaning the cavity of bacteria and debris. If the decay is near the root, a liner made of glass ionomer, composite resin, or other material may be placed next to the never to protect you tooth.

Lastly the cavity is filled with composite resin fillings, white fillings only.  Dr. Bruggeman does not use metal fillings. Dr. Bruggeman will finish the filling by polishing the material and area around the filled cavity.

What Types Of Filling Materials Are Available?

Teeth can be filled with gold, porcelain, silver amalgam or composite resin fillings. Silver amalgam consists of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper. How do you determine which filling best fits you? Often your insurance coverage and the location of the decay will determine which filling you will receive. Dr. Bruggeman may also make recommendations based on your case.
